Public transport Areas 1 and 2 (PT1 and PT2 Areas)

Public transport Areas 1 and 2 (PT1 and PT2 Areas)

PT 1 and 2 areas are areas where reduced parking requirements apply. Examples include the areas along the West Coast route serviced by MyCiTi buses, as well as priority transit-oriented development areas such as Voortrekker Road.

How PT areas work

PT 1 and 2 areas recognise the impact that the scheduled and high-quality public transport network has had on reducing the use of private vehicle and lower demand for parking in these areas. This is also in line with the City’s objective to address private car dependency proactively and to adopt policies which will promote mass transit-oriented development.

PT 1 and 2 parking requirements will significantly reduce red tape if a property is located in such defined area, as the site will automatically qualify for lower parking requirements.

PT1 or PT2 classifications

A PT1 classification demarcates an area where the use of public transport is promoted, but where the City considers the provision of public transport inadequate or where the use of motor vehicles is limited.

A PT2 classification demarcates an area where the use of public transport is promoted and the City considers the provision of public transport good, or where the use of motor vehicles is very limited.

Please note

To see if you benefit, refer to the City's Map Viewer. Search your property and switch on the Spatial Planning theme to display PT1 and PT2 zones.
